Paris Hilton jumps the shark

Brit pensioner 10 times more popular

Published Friday 25th August 2006 14:54 GMT

Earlier this week, Paris Hilton launched her own video channel on YouTube to promote her new music album.

This seemed like a marketing wonk's dream - Paris is of course infamous for her mucky video appearances, and YouTube is full of mucky videos.

But at the time of writing poor Paris is being soundly beaten by a British pensioner called Geriatric1927. The man in question - he's called Peter - created a media storm earlier this month with the popularity of his video musings. His videos tell the story of his life, his love of motorbikes and "a bit of a grumble".

Peter is still adding his videoed memories to YouTube - and he has 10 times as many subscribers as Paris.

Paris has 2,549 subscribers while Peter has 23,267. Ouch. Peter's videos have been watched 720,418 times while Ms Hilton has managed just 285,572.

Admittedly, Peter had a bit of a headstart - he started posting videos in early August. But he's not heir to any international hotel chains and doesn't employ anyone to push his profile. And he keeps his cardigan on too - Geriatric1927, we salute you.

The Reg emailed Peter a request for an interview, but sadly we have yet to get a reply.
